Dear Neighbors and Friends,

In a special concert at the Bay Club on September 20th at 7 PM the Brothers Four will remember the life and career of John Paine, one of the group’s founding members.

John began coming with his family to Port Ludlow half a century ago. He and his wife Gail got married on the beach here and have called Port Ludlow home for more than 40 years. The perfect place to celebrate the life and music of this remarkable man.

As someone who started singing with John over fifty-five years ago and who, along with my wife Pat, has been his and Gail’s Port Ludlow neighbor for more than twenty-five years, I look forward to a memorable evening with neighbors and friends.

The Brothers Four have been a Northwest institution for more than 65 years. The group has brought folk music to the world beginning in 1960 with hits like Greenfields, Try to Remember, and the Oscar nominated Green Leaves of Summer. No matter how far the music took him, John always came home to Port Ludlow.

We invite you to join us on this night to remember.

Your neighbor,

Mark Pearson

EARLY DAYS OF BROTHERS FOUR

Who was John Paine?

John Paine had a remarkable life. At twenty-two, the singing group he was part of, The Brothers Four, had the number two song in the world, Greenfields. A year later, in 1961, they sang their Oscar nominated song, Green Leaves of Summer, at the Academy Awards. The group performed multiple times at the White House.

They and the music they shared formed a love affair with Japan and the people of that country that continues to this day.

At the same time John’s appreciation for living was also filled with simpler things. Happy memories with friends and family. He moved out of the city forty years ago to enjoy life at a more leisurely pace. He retired from touring in 2004, looking back only when someone asked him to share memories from his storied past.
